My breastfeeding and pumping journeys as a mom have been 2 of the most trying and rewarding experiences I’ve ever gone through.
It took many trials and errors, and trips to the store for formula, for me to actually figure out what the heck I was doing.
As I matured in my journey, I found the things I needed to help me and my baby be more comfortable while I breastfed and pumped…sometimes doing both at the same time!
Aside from you, your boobs, and your baby, there are things you can use to make your experience more pleasant and more comfortable. 😃
If you plan on nursing or pumping your baby, these 13 breastfeeding and pumping essentials need to be part of your arsenal like right now.

Top 13 breastfeeding and pumping essentials
Nope, not for your baby, but for you. I had overactive let down and feeding my babies regularly involved spraying them in the face. Even when I pumped, my breastmilk would spray out, so yeah you can imagine the mess.
These super absorbent organic cotton burp cloths are a life-saver for both breastfeeding and pumping moms!
Nursing bras and tanks
You’ll definitely several nursing tanks and nursing bras. These are perfect for breastfeeding in public! To avoid doing laundry everyday (trust me mama you just won’t even have the time), get yourself a good amount of these nursing undergarments.
This nursing pillow is both for breastfeeding and pumping moms. It’s important for comfort and proper positioning of baby! Aside from using this to nurse my baby, I used mine to rest my bottles while I was pumping. 😊
Got sore nipples? Apply a generous amount of this organic nipple butter on them. Like a new pair of shoes needs to be “broken in” so do your nipples 😭. Nipple soreness and pain is generally normal and is expected during the early stages of breastfeeding.
As your nipples become softer and baby perfect his/her latch, the pain will generally subside. If the pain doesn’t go away or if you need help, contact a Lactation Consultant for guidance
To protect your clothing for being soaked with milk, try these amazing breast pads. I’ve used them since I had my first baby- they’re great!
I used the Ameda Purely Yours electric double breast pump. It’s perfect for breastfeeding and pumping moms! I bought it about 2 years ago and it has done a great job over the years. Use these breast milk storage bags to store your liquid gold.
Like many sleep-deprived new moms, you may struggle to eat wholesome meals on a daily basis (especially when you’re suffering from lack of sleep).
Your baby will always get what he/she needs from you.
To ensure that you aren’t left lacking essential vitamins and minerals which are also essential for healing during postpartum, taking a prenatal vitamin will is needed.
Omega 3 supplement
Taking an Omega 3 supplement daily is important for nursing moms. Not only is DHA is transferred from mother to child via the placenta during pregnancy, it is also transferred via breast milk. This DHA-rich supplement was recommended to me by my chiropractor.
DHA is especially important from the third trimester of pregnancy until about 18 months postpartum, which is when the baby’s brain goes through its biggest growth spurt.
Oh, and did I forget to mention that this supplement is a must-have for all mommies struggling with pregnancy induced pelvic and back pain?
There were many times where I had to use cold gel pads to soothe my angry nipples. Some days, breastfeeding and pumping left me wanting to soak my boobs in a tub of ice but I couldn’t so pads were the next best thing.
The Ultimate Breastfeeding Class + The Ultimate Back to Work Pumping class
Investing in a breastfeeding course is a great way for you to prepare yourself for success. If you want to learn how to breastfeed like a boss or how to pump like a boss, I highly recommend you take The Ultimate Breastfeeding Class or the The Ultimate Back to Work Pumping Class, both by Milkology.
This course was created by a mama of 3 who also happens to be a Certified Lactation Educator! Oh, and did I forgot to mention how affordable these courses are?
For less than what you’d pay for 4 Starbucks frappucinos, you get lifetime access to whichever course you decide to purchase!
I recently took the course and I can honestly say that I would’ve had a much easier time breastfeeding my daughter had I taken this course.
Much of what I learned in the course was also taught to me by the midwife who delivered my son.
And guess what, my son was exclusively breastfed for 9 months, whereas my daughter was only breastfed for 3.
I ended up pumping for my daughter so she could still benefit from my breast milk but even that was a bit of a struggle because I had no idea what I was doing. This course would’ve been a life-saver.
Take it from a mama who’s been through hell and back with both breastfeeding and pumping, educate yourself beforehand by taking this amazing either one of these courses!
